I\u2019ve recently become enamored with the Google Gemini AI. Seeing how well it helped me with everything from email replies to DIY household projects, I challenged myself to use AI even in (especially in!) situations where it normally wouldn\u2019t occur to me to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I maintain a private archive portion of my website, where I upload every single photo I\u2019ve ever worked on. To make the photos searchable, I tag each one with keywords. This helps me quickly find, say, photos of dads for a Father\u2019s Day Instagram post, or photos featuring the color red. However, I have to guess which keywords I might search for decades down the road, and I’m sure I don’t always do a great job. I wanted to see if Gemini could take over this task – not only to save me time, but also hopefully to improve upon my performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This required a more advanced Google AI program called Antigravity, and a $4\/month subscription to an API. It was surprisingly easy to set up. In less than a half hour, I had something that worked. Great! The only problem is that the keywords are utterly useless. When keywording my ‘Benches of Seaside Heights’ project, I typically use phrases like, \u2018elderly women,\u2019 \u2018couples,\u2019 \u2018ice cream,\u2019 or \u2018funny dads.\u2019 AI gives me \u2018forearm,\u2019 ‘knee,’ \u2018sitting,\u2019 and \u2018bag.\u2019 Sometimes the keywords are not even accurate (see ‘winter’ and ‘goggles’ below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI is much more reliable when processing photos of landscapes and architecture. Its primary limitation lies in its complete inability to analyze human subjects to accurately assess age, emotion, and relationships – all of which are central to a street photography project like ‘Benches.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m hoping that Google will improve the API over time, so I’ll stick with it for a while. In the meantime, I complained to the chatbot. It apologized to me, sympathized with my frustrations, and agreed to submit my feedback to the development team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next up: I will ask AI to give me a prompts for a new art project!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
