Benches of Seaside Heights

Every summer for the past 5 years, I’ve walked up and down the mile-long boardwalk at Seaside Heights, NJ, taking at least one candid snapshot of every single occupied bench.  I intend to continue this series indefinitely, both as a study of human behavior, and a chronicle of Seaside’s visitors over time.

The subjects reveal themselves with surprising frankness - they gawk, laugh, scowl, converse (or refuse to converse), greedily eat junk food, and preside over voluminous piles of personal belongings. At first, I tried to pick and choose the subjects. But I soon found that my favorite photos were the ones I didn’t plan and barely remembered taking. Now I try not to look at the subjects at all. When I get home, each photo is a surprise, a sort of gift to open, something which gives me great pleasure.

Each NFT contains all of the ‘Benches’ images from one summer. Due to the number of images, many of these photos have never been seen, and will likely remain unpublished. By collecting these NFTs, you will support the continuation of this project, and own a piece of Seaside Heights memorabilia.
